As I type this there are two men in my bedroom. As some of you will know this doesn't happen too often ;-)

What's all this got to do with 23 Things I hear you cry. Well, nothing, but it's on my mind so I thought I'd share. Any way, I have set up some RSS feeds to some of the blogs on 23 Things, not to all of them because I noticed that a few are languishing all bare and unloved. Maybe they need some more encouragement. If they read my blog they might get the idea that blogs don't all have to be intellectual and high-brow...
I quite like Google reader, but there must be others we can use. I am a lazy web user though and do still like a nice email alert telling me to look at something. Can we get Google Reader to alert us via email? Basically I guess I could set an Outlook reminder to get me to check it. Then maybe once I'm used to looking it will become second nature.
I am still finding blogging strange though. My online experiences started with using the very first chat sites back in 1996 whilst I was at Uni... The Rose and Crown Pub... none of you young whipper snappers will remember that. My bestest mate is someone I met on that site - turned out that after chatting online for 3 years we were by then working round the corner from each other in Leeds. So I guess for me the web has always been about communicating, chatting, interacting, whereas a blog is about writing and putting it out there with no instant feedback - weird. You'd think therefore that I would be a big fan of Twitter..... but more about that another time eh?

Regarding other RSS readers: The browser Opera 11 has a built in RSS reader that flashes up a little notice when something appears like Outlook. It's a nice touch and the layout of the reader is nice too. It does mean that you lose some functionality as not every website supports or is supported by (I'm not sure what the correct term is)Opera. I'm sure there's a Firefox add-on too.
ReplyDeleteFunctionality is such an ugly word. I am sorry.
Well certainly journal TOCs & database alerts can be set with email as I'm sure you know!
ReplyDeleteTwo sides to the coin - a full in box but at least you know about it, or a feed reader which you have to remember to check!
Yes other feed readers are available, more on the BBC site (which is on the 23 Things blog)

Of course site updates don't necessarily mean that the part of the page that has changed is what you're interested in, or indeed that the site has actually changed - sometimes it's just a wash and brush up rather than new info.
Email alerts are better in this respect but I guess it depend what you want to be updated on etc
